Episode 3: Captive (post production)
Outside of Reading, VT, on a quiet stretch of VT Route 106, there is what looks like a gravestone sitting to the side of a small pull off overlooking Knapp Brook. On closer inspection, its not a gravestone but rather a marker, which refers to the spot as "Indian Stones". It marks the spot near where, in 1754 Susannah Willard Johnson gave birth in the woods, having been taken captive by a group of Abenaki warriors the day before. This story is a popular and well known local narrative of our early Colonial history but as these things usually are, very one sided. I am interested in the complete story, from both the English AND the Native American perspectives. Let's hit the road!
